Kate’s first AHP seminar was in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 2012, where she witnessed the camaraderie that came with being involved with the association. “Instead of feeling like an outsider, the membership embraced me,” she says. Her continued involvement in AHP includes entering the annual awards contest, attending the 2014 and 2015 seminars. In San Antonio, she joined a panel discussing “Careers in Equine Publishing for Students.”
Her professional career as a communicator and photographer has focused on the Western industry. From 2007 until 2009 she served as communications coordinator for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2010, Western Horseman hired Byars as assistant editor.
In 2013, Byars began her freelance career focusing on Western stock horse publications that included Western Horseman and Quarter Horse News. Since then, she has also been published in the Paint Horse Journal, Chrome and Horse Illustrated. In addition to print publications, her photography clients include three successful boot companies: Rios of Mercedes, Anderson Bean and Olathe. She believes her experience in marketing, communications and digital media allows her to bring a range of practical knowledge and perspective to the AHP Board.
