Stephanie is Editor-in-Chief of The Horse. She received a B.A. in Journalism and Equestrian Studies from Averett College in Danville, Virginia, and was the 1997 AHP Student Award Winner. Stephanie’s family put her up on their gaited horses before she could walk, and she had her competitive beginnings in 4-H (hunters) and Pony Club (combined training). She campaigned eventers into her early 20s and now hacks her friends’ Percheron-Thoroughbred cross through the woods whenever the opportunity arises. After starting at The Horse as an editorial assistant in 1999, she rose through the ranks as staff writer, news editor, copy/features editor, and managing editor-print, before beginning her current role in March 2010. During her time at The Horse, her favorite subject challenges have been documenting the emergence of West Nile virus in the United States, chasing down news on five sabotaged Saddlebreds in Kentucky, and bringing to light the plight of horse owners impacted by Hurricane Katrina. AHP judges have awarded her first place in both the news article and feature article categories during her time at The Horse. Stephanie is a strong believer in the student award program and has two other past student award winners on her team. Freelance gigs during her time in Kentucky have included stories in the travel and science markets. She also enjoys photography, cooking, cycling long distances, swimming, blogging, and journeying to faraway places—especially Kenya—in her free time.
